Three days later Hitler made what he referred to as his ‘Last Appeal to Reason’ to the British government and the British people. Addressing an electrified Reichstag Hitler declared, ‘A great Empire will be destroyed, an Empire which it was never my intention to destroy or even to harm... I consider myself in a position to make this appeal since I am not the vanquished begging favours but the victor speaking in the name of reason.’ Remarkably, the BBC decided to issue its own response to this appeal before the government formally rejected the offer. A Daily Express journalist called Sefton Delmer announced the repudiation in rather colourful language that same evening, stating: ‘Let me tell you what we here in Britain think of this appeal of yours to what you [are] pleased to call our reason and common sense. Herr Führer and Reichkanzler, we hurl it right back at you, right in your evil smelling teeth ...’79
